Azores

Discover Azores

The Azores are a group of nine islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 kilometers west of Portugal. As a Portuguese territory, these volcanic islands are known for their diverse landscapes, which include crater lakes, rugged coastlines, and geothermal springs. The Azores are a popular destination for nature lovers, offering opportunities for whale watching, hiking, and exploring unique volcanic formations.

São Miguel

Sailing around São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, offers breathtaking views of its dramatic coastlines, towering cliffs, and the vibrant, lush greenery that covers the island. São Miguel is known for its remarkable landscapes, including the twin lakes of Sete Cidades and the steaming fumaroles of Furnas, where you can even try the traditional "cozido"—a stew cooked underground by volcanic heat.
A hike around the island reveals stunning views of craters, waterfalls, and endless fields of hydrangeas, making it a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Itinerary

Sailing around the remote islands of the Azores offers a mix of ocean sailing and peaceful island hopping, surrounded by lush green landscapes and volcanic history.

For a week-long sailing experience, we recommend starting in Faial, Terceira, or São Jorge, as these islands are close together, making it possible to create a complete itinerary.

As you navigate between Faial, Terceira, and São Jorge, you’ll experience the rhythm of the open Atlantic, with plenty of time to enjoy the tranquillity of being at sea. Anchoring near each island reveals a raw landscape shaped by ancient volcanic craters, where green slopes descend sharply to cliffs that plunge into the ocean.

Horta, the main city on Faial Island, is the perfect starting point for your journey, known for its famous marina and beautiful views of Pico Island to the south and its iconic volcano.

From there, sailing to Terceira brings you closer to vibrant villages and natural wonders like the island's volcanic caldeiras, large craters formed by ancient eruptions.

São Jorge, with its sharp peaks and long, green ridges, invites you to explore its quiet, unspoiled nature, its sheltered coves and picturesque anchorages.

While Ponta Delgada in São Miguel is also a popular destination in the Azores, it’s significantly farther from the other islands. For that reason, São Miguel is ideal as a starting point for two-week trips or for crews comfortable with longer sailing hours. The island features stunning highlights such as the geothermal hot springs of Furnas, lush gardens, and the iconic two-colored Lagoa das Sete Cidades, showcasing the rich natural beauty of the Azores.

Duchnowski

I started my sailing adventure with inland cruises, exploring Masuria, which developed into a great passion for water, wind and the sailing lifestyle. The beginning of sea expeditions is primarily the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. It was the northern seas of Europe that shaped me as a sailor and as a person.

The last few years have been marked by warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Croatia has become a second home and sailing is a way of life.

After sailing over 40,000 nautical miles, I am very happy to pass on my knowledge and spread my passion for sailing.
